FS9 and FSX

Hi All,
I now have FS9 and FSX installed on the same PC.
More than likely my order went FS9 - ASv6.5 - FSX
I am now testing out FSX - I know that ASv6.5 is compatible with FSX - can I flip between versions? e.g. running ASv6.5 & FS9 one day and ASv6.5 & FSX the next?
So from I what I understand I'll need FSUIPC 4 (onwards)??
So, slightly off topic and appreciate if here is not the place to ask; I've heard about simconnect - what's it's purpose?
Thanks
Carl
